California State University, Fullerton is a predominantly commuter campus enrolling approximately 30,000 students. Accelerated faculty hires, coupled with the anticipated occupancy of Mihaylo Hall, a new facility for Business, in 2008, created an opportunity to realign office and related support space campus wide. Over the next three years, at least 70,000 assignable square feet will be involved in a related chain of space reallocation.
The initial phase of this project addressed short-term needs, including how to accommodate an estimated 60 to 80 new faculty members. Rickes Associates (RA) analyzed existing conditions, including individual office square footages, issues of fragmentation and cohesiveness, shared vs. private office spaces, and affiliated support areas. A campus visit and a series of meetings with key administrators clarified current and future office space needs associated with each department. Alternative space allocation scenarios to accommodate this growth were then explored, as appropriate.
A subsequent phase addressed broader space allocation opportunities resulting from the occupancy of Mihaylo Hall. This included an assessment of faculty office space that would be freed up and subsequently available for reassignment.
